Filing is used to remove small amount of material from metal surfaces either to shape, size or finish it. Files can work on internal or external surfaces of any geometrical shape. File is moved over the surface to be removed, in a to and fro motion and by applying pressure only in forward stroke.
Different filing methods in use are: Straight filing, Cross filing and draw filing.
Straight filing
In this method, file is moved back and forth in a direction along the axis of the file. File is moved right or left after completion of each stroke. The texture formed on the filed surface will be parallel lines in the direction of stroke.
This method is used at roughing stage to remove more material with less time or to remove material from local are only.
Cross filing
In this method, file is moved right to left and then left to right along with back and forth motion. This method is used at the finishing stage to maintain flatness of the surface. The texture formed will be crossed lines with good finish.
Draw filing
This method is different from normal filing method. The file is held with both hands at handle and point. The filing stroke is given in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the file. This method is used to finish and maintain flatness of narrow surfaces without removing much material. Single cut files are used for draw filing.
