Types of chisel

Chisel is a cutting tool used for chipping thick layer of material from metal surfaces for various operations like cutting keyways, oil grooves etc. Chisels are made out of carbon steel hardened and tempered at the cutting edge. To suit the various applications, chisels are available in different shapes.


Flat Chisel
It is the most commonly used chisel in fitting shop for general chipping operations and to work on flat surfaces. Flat chisels are available from 100 to 200mm lengths and with the cutting edges being 5 to 20mm wide.
 

Cross cut chisel
The cross cut chisel or cape chisel is used for cutting grooves in large surfaces.


Half round chisel
This is particularly useful for cutting oil ways or grooves in bearing, pulleys and bushes. They are also used for setting over pilot holes.


Diamond point chisel
It is made square at the point and then bevelled to make cutting edge. It is used for cutting grooves and squaring corners.



Side chisel
It is ground and bevelled on side only. it is used for cutting sides where flat chisel cannot enter.
