Hammers

Hammers are used to strike on metals or tools for various operations. They are made of forged steel. A hammer consists of 4 parts namely, Peen, Head, Eye and Face. Hammers are fixed to the wooden handles by using wedges. The size of the hammer is specified by its weight.

Types of hammers
According to the shape of the peen, hammers are available as Ball peen hammer, Cross peen hammer and Straight peen hammer.

Ball peen hammer
It is the most commonly used hammer for general hammering work and for riveting. Size varies from 0.11 to 0.91kg.

Cross peen hammer
It has the peen perpendicular to the axis of the handle and make it suitable for striking on corner of bends in sheet metal work.

Straight peen hammer
It has peen peen parallel to the axis of the handle. As a cross peen hammer, straight peen hammers are also used in sheet metal work to strike on corner of bends but in a different direction.

Soft hammer
When it is required to strike on metals with minimum damage to the surface, soft hammers are used. It has soft heads made of hard rubber, wood, plastics like nylon, soft metals like copper and aluminium. A wooden soft hammer is called as mallet.
