Marking, scribing and punching are the operations used to layout on metal surfaces either for cutting, shaping or drilling. The various tools used for marking and layout operations are: Surface plate, Try square, Scriber, Punch, Divider, Surface gauge, Steel rule, Combination set, Vernier height gauge etc.
Surface Plate
The Surface plate which is installed on a table or on a metal frame, is the base for all marking and layout operations in fitter shop. Surface plates are made out of cast iron, scraped to get accurate flat surface. Surface plates are also available as granite blocks or table.
Try square
It is marking and checking instrument for right angle. It is made of two parts, stock or beam and blade. Try squares are specified by the length of the blade without stock.

Scriber
A scriber is a pointed tool used for marking lines on metals. Scribers are made from high carbon steel and points are hardened and tempered.

Punch
A Punch with 30 degree is used to make indentation on scribed line to make it permanently visible without getting erased while working.
A dot punch with 60 degree is used to punch on lines and a Centre punch with 90 degree is used to make the punch mark in the drill centre more wide to locate the drill easily.
Divider
A divider is a tool used to scribe circles, arcs and for dividing the lines or arcs into equal parts.
