Super finishing

Super finishing method is employed to obtain very fine surface finish. A very fine grit abrasive stick or belt is pressed against the surface of the work piece with a light spring pressure. The stick or job is given with a reciprocating motion. Usually the work speed is slow and the reciprocation is done rapid. Lubricants like mixture of kerosene and oil is applied to get high quality surface finish. The figure shows a schematic diagram of a shaft super finishing.

Super finishing may be applied for external and internal surfaces of

parts made of steel, cast iron, and nonferrous alloys which have be

previously ground and turned.
