Honing

Honing is an abrading process mostly used for finishing round holes

by means of bonded abrasive stones called honing stones. The

honing stones are held around the periphery of the cylindrical honing

tool is illustrated in figure.

The honing can be done manually or by machine. Honing is done on

general purpose machines such as lathe, drilling machines etc. But

more economical result can be obtained by honing machines. In

precision honing the work is usually held in fixtures and the honing

tool is given a slow reciprocating motion as it rotates.

The operation is normally confined to remove amount less than

0.25 mm. This method is normally used for finishing automobile

crank journals.
