Types of file-Shapes

According to the shape, files are available as :
Flat file
This file is tapered in width and thickness and one of the most commonly used file for general work. They are always double cut on faces and single cut on edges.

Hand file
Hand file is parallel in width and tapered in thickness. It is used for finishing flat internal surfaces. It has one edge with no teeth called safe edge.


Square file
This file is square in cross section, tapered towards the end and double cut . It is used for filing square corners, enlarging square or rectangular openings.

Round file
Round files are usually tapered towards the point. It s useful for filing internal round sections.


Half round file
This file has a cross section about 1/3rd of a circle and has teeth on all sides. It is suitable for filing on large round internal pockets.


Triangular file
It is used for filing sharp corners and angles.

Knife edge file
It is shaped like a knife with one edge narrow. These are used for filing narrow slots, notches and grooves.
