Rolling is the method of forming metal into the desired shape by passing the metal between rolls. It may be hot rolling or cold rolling. In hot rolling, the metal in the form of ingots, blooms or slabs are heated to the plastic state and passed between rolls revolving at the same speed. As the metal passes through the rolls it may be reduced in thickness and increased in length.
Various shapes can be produced by designs of the grooves in the rolls. The figure illustrates the principle of rolling.
The form of bars, plates, sheets and other structural sections shown
