Cutting Parameters

Cutting speed

The cutting speed (v) of a tool is the speed at which the material is removed by the tool from the workpiece. Cutting speed is expressed in meter / minute.

Cutting speed =   dn/1000 m/minute  where
d  =   diameter of the work in mm
n  =   rpm of the work

Feed
The feed (s) of a cutting tool in a lathe work is the distance the tool advances for each revolution of the work. It is expressed in millimeters / revolution. Coarser feeds are used for roughing and finer feeds for finishing.

The value for cutting speed and feed is selected depending upon the various factors like work material, tool material, type of operations performed, finish required and rigidity of the machine.

Depth of cut
The depth of cut (t) is the perpendicular distance measured from the machined surface to the uncut surface of the workpiece. In a lathe the depth of cut is expressed as follows:

Depth of cut = (d1 – d2)/2       where
d1 = diameter of the work surface before machining
d2 = diameter of the machined surface
